They believe St. Christopher medals provide some protection for travelers. They probably have in mind more conventional dangers, like bad weather and reckless drivers. However, a young couple adopting the nomad lifestyle need its defense against an ancient supernatural evil that preys on wayward motorists in Andre \u00d8vredal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt33763941\/?ref_=nm_flmg_job_1_accord_2_cdt_t_1\"><strong>Passenger<\/strong><\/a>, which releases Friday in theaters.<br \/><br \/>As a former foster-care child, Maddie yearns to put down roots. Her soon-to-be fianc\u00e9, Tyler lived in a house with his dramatically dysfunctional family, but he never considered it a safe and proper home. Consequently, the prospect of life on the road appeals to him. Maddie has her doubts, but she gives it a try for his sake. Like trooper, she makes the best of it for a while, until they pull over for a grisly accident along a lonely stretch of highway.<br \/><br \/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/><br \/>At the scene, Maddie keeps spying a vague Michael Myers-esque \u201cshape\u201d from the corner of her eye, but whenever Tyler looks, it disappears. Over the next few days, the shadowy entity stalks and toys with Maddie, in a series of increasingly terrifying late-night encounters.<br \/><br \/>Eventually, it starts menacing Tyler as well. No matter how hard they try, they cannot shake it. It literally marked their van with three diagonal lines, the traditional \u201cHobo Code\u201d for \u201cthis is not a safe place.\u201d Yet, the malignant force clearly has a direct connection to them that goes deeper than their wheels. (Despite popular misunderstanding, the Catholic Church still recognizes Saint Christopher as a Saint. They simply no longer vouch for the authenticity of what was his traditional feast day.)<br \/><br \/>Intriguingly, <strong>Passenger<\/strong> rather skillfully fuses elements of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt9770150\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_nomadland\"><strong>Nomadland<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3235888\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_it%20follows\"><strong>It Follows<\/strong><\/a>, and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0734644\/?ref_=fn_t_6\">The Hitch-Hiker<\/a>\u201d episode of <strong>The Twilight Zone<\/strong>. T.W. Burgess &amp; Zachary Donahue\u2019s screenplay combines the demonic horror represented by the Passenger, with the folk horror trappings borrowed from early 20th Century Hobo culture, which reached its zenith during the Great Depression. The results are surprisingly smart and consistently unnerving. Yes, \u00d8vredal enjoys springing a good jump-scare on the audience, but he also tautly cranks up the suspense during several longer, cleverly executed sequences.<br \/><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-34390 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-3-1024x429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-3-1024x429.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-3-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-3-768x322.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-3-696x291.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-3-1068x447.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-3.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><b>\u00a9<\/b>Courtesy of Paramount Pictures<\/p>\r\n<p>It helps that co-leads Lou Llobell and Jacob Scipio have considerable dramatic chops, but they are not burdened with movie-star reputations that precede them. Llobell is probably best-known for Apple TV+\u2019s disappointing <strong>Foundation<\/strong> series (because it takes Isaac Asimov\u2019s revolutionary novels and turns them into a <strong>Dune<\/strong> copycat), but they both look and act convincingly like everyday working-class people. They additionally develop nice chemistry that keeps viewers hooked, even during moments that inevitably strain credulity.<br \/><br \/>As a bonus, Oscar-winner Melissa Leo is entertainingly eccentric and intense as Diana, a veteran guru of the \u201cVan Life\u201d movement. Think of her character and performance as the closest \u00d8vredal and the producers could get to having Frances McDormand reprise her role from <strong>Nomadland<\/strong>. For added authenticity, many real-life Van Lifers appears as extras at campsites.<br \/><br \/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/><br \/><strong>Passenger<\/strong> is deceptively simple, but eerily potent, in ways that are reminiscent of \u00d8vredal\u2019s claustrophobic chamber-horror film, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3289956\/\"><strong>The Autopsy of Jane Doe<\/strong><\/a>. Yet, the lore involving St. Christopher, his demonic nemesis, and Hobo culture carries deep archetypal resonance. As in all of the best horror films, it acknowledges the existence of evil as a very real and palpable threat to innocence and decency. Nevertheless, Diana\u2019s advice\u2014always travel by day and never stop for accidents\u2014ironically entails some rather anti-social (and depending on the circumstances, potentially illegal) consequences. Seriously, what would Saint Christopher do?<br \/><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-34391 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-4-1024x428.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-4-1024x428.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-4-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-4-768x321.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-4-696x291.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-4-1068x446.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Passenger-4.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><b>\u00a9<\/b>Courtesy of Paramount Pictures<\/p>\r\n<p>Regardless, the biggest star of <strong>Passenger<\/strong> might be Federico Ferardi\u2019s moodily lit cinematography, which always shows viewers just enough to maximize both the fear and the sense of mystery. The way an outdoor projector screening William Wyler\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0046250\/\"><strong>Roman Holiday<\/strong><\/a> (conveniently also a Paramount release) becomes a makeshift flashlight represents a masterclass in the use of light and imagery to build tension. Frankly, this relatively unheralded genre film is as resourceful as a Van Life Nomad.
