Running from July 10 to July 26 across five New York venues, including\u00a0<b>Film at Lincoln Center<\/b>,\u00a0<b>SVA Theatre<\/b>,\u00a0<b>IFC Center<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Anthology Film Archives<\/b>, and the\u00a0<b>Korean Cultural Center New York<\/b>,\u00a0NYAFF\u00a02026 marks a major milestone for North America\u2019s leading festival of Asian cinema. Screenings at FLC take place July 10\u201323, and two venues are homecomings: Anthology Film Archives (where the festival began in 2002) on July 16\u201318, and IFC Center (the festival\u2019s home for four formative editions) on July 13, 15, 16, and 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cWe are proud to support the 25th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival, and uplift the stories of Asian communities in NYC and beyond,\u201d said\u00a0<b>Commissioner Rafael Espinal of the NYC Mayor\u2019s Office of Media and Entertainment<\/b>. \u201cFestivals like\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0are an extremely vital part of the city\u2019s filmmaking and entertainment ecosystem, and create platforms and opportunities to expose New Yorkers to new and diverse storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Opening Night on July 10 at FLC will feature the North American premiere of Yeon Sang-ho\u2019s\u00a0<b><i>Colony<\/i><\/b>, the highly anticipated Korean box-office sensation fresh from its world premiere in Cannes\u2019 Midnight Screenings program\u2014the same section that launched\u00a0<i>Train to Busan<\/i>\u00a010 years ago. Already the fastest Korean hit of the year, the film locks its survivors inside a central Seoul high-rise while a virus tears through the floors quicker than anyone can say \u201czombie.\u201d Jun Ji-hyun (Gianna Jun) plays the biotech professor who turns reluctant hero, alongside Ji Chang-wook, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Shin Hyun-been.<b>\u00a0Yeon Sang-ho\u00a0<\/b>will be in person on Opening Night ahead of the film\u2019s August 28 theatrical release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><i>Colony<\/i>\u00a0arrives after Korean cinema\u2019s strongest box-office rebound since the pandemic.\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0is planning a special presentation of the year\u2019s other biggest hit:\u00a0<b><i>The King\u2019s Warden<\/i><\/b>, now the highest-grossing Korean film of all time, starring Yoo Hae-jin (<i>Exhuma<\/i>) and Park Ji-hoon. One film broke the all-time record. The other got to the top faster than anything else this year. Both are at the 25th edition of\u00a0NYAFF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Following\u00a0<i>Colony<\/i>\u2019s premiere on July 10, the<b>\u00a0Opening Night Market<\/b>\u00a0returns to the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at Film at Lincoln Center\u2019s Walter Reade Theater for an annual gathering of the\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0community with live music and Asian street food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><b>The festival is presented with major support from the\u00a0Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY),\u00a0The Ministry of Culture of Thailand and the Department of Cultural Promotion,\u00a0Fundstrat Global Advisors,\u00a0BitMine,\u00a0Cathay Pacific,\u00a0Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York,\u00a0Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), and\u00a0Korean Film Council (KOFIC),\u00a0whose partnership amplifies Asian cinema\u2019s most vital voices.\u00a0<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Opening Weekend Gala: Honoring Joan Chen<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">NYAFF\u2019s Opening Weekend Gala returns July 11 at Lincoln Center\u2019s David Rubenstein Atrium, where\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0presents the\u00a0<b>Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award<\/b>\u00a0to Joan Chen. From\u00a0<i>The Last Emperor<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Twin Peaks\u00a0<\/i>to her recent work in\u00a0<i>D\u00ecdi<\/i>\u00a0and her luminous turn in\u00a0<b><i>Montr\u00e9al, Ma Belle<\/i><\/b>, Chen has spent four decades widening the range of what an Asian actor can do on American and Asian screens.\u00a0<b>Sean Wang<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Andrew Ahn<\/b>, her directors on\u00a0<i>D\u00ecdi<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>The Wedding Banquet<\/i>, will present the award.\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0presents the New York premiere of\u00a0<i>Montr\u00e9al, Ma Belle<\/i>\u00a0the following day, July 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Festival Highlights<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">This year\u2019s program features more than 50 filmmakers, ranging from acclaimed veterans to exciting new voices, who will be on hand for post-screening Q&amp;As and special appearances, giving audiences an insider\u2019s look into the stories behind their work. The 25th edition balances two things that have defined\u00a0NYAFF: discoveries and massive hits from Asian countries that have been primarily unseen in the U.S. and New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Yeon Sang-ho: Apocalypse Architect<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Yeon Sang-ho first reached\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0audiences a decade ago and comes back as one of the most bankable names in streaming as the Netflix hitmaker behind\u00a0<i>Hellbound<\/i>, which hit number one worldwide within a day of its release, and\u00a0<i>Parasyte: The Grey<\/i>. His new series\u00a0<i>Human Vapor<\/i>, a reimagining of Toho\u2019s 1960 sci-fi classic, hits Netflix worldwide on July 2, eight days before Yeon lands in New York. He is also the architect of the most influential zombie universe in modern Asian cinema, and\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0is showing all of it:\u00a0<b><i>Seoul Station<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(his 2016 animated horror),\u00a0<b><i>Train to Busan<\/i><\/b>\u00a0in a new 4K presentation on its 10th anniversary North American theatrical re-release,\u00a0<b><i>Peninsula<\/i><\/b>, and now\u00a0<b><i>Colony<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Rising Stars<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Two of Asian cinema\u2019s fastest-rising actors will attend the 25th edition as\u00a0<b>Screen International Rising Star honorees<\/b>, both in person. Hong Kong\u2019s\u00a0<b>Angela Yuen<\/b>\u00a0is a Golden Horse and Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress nominee and lately a fixture of the new Hong Kong cinema, with films opposite Louis Koo and Greg Hsu in the past year alone. Yuen will appear at the North American premieres of\u00a0<b><i>Gamer Girls\u00a0<\/i><\/b>and<b><i>\u00a0Afterpiece<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<b>Sara Minami<\/b>, who has been a consistent presence on Japanese screens since 2017, with an NHK Taiga drama and a Tokyo International Film Festival premiere among her latest highlights, appears with two films at the festival this year,\u00a0<b><i>Magical Secret Tour\u00a0<\/i><\/b>and<b><i>\u00a0All Greens<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Hong Kong Keeps Rolling<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Hong Kong has built one of the world\u2019s most distinctive film industries, and this year\u2019s Hong Kong Panorama, presented by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York with support from award-winning airline Cathay Pacific, is a reminder of why audiences continue to fall in love with Hong Kong cinema. Longman Leung\u2019s<b><i>\u00a0Cold War 1994<\/i><\/b>\u00a0is one of the year\u2019s biggest Hong Kong film events, the kind of large-scale local production that showcases the industry at full throttle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Philip Yung attends in person with\u00a0<b><i>Cyclone<\/i><\/b>, 10 years after\u00a0<i>Port of Call\u00a0<\/i>played\u00a0NYAFF\u00a0and swept the Hong Kong Film Awards. Jack Ng\u2019s\u00a0<b><i>Night King<\/i><\/b>\u00a0screens in a director\u2019s cut never before shown outside of Hong Kong\u2013\u2013darker, grittier, and far closer to the original spirit of Hong Kong genre and Category III cinema than the theatrical version.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Representing a new generation of filmmakers are Keane T.K. Wong\u2019s debut\u00a0<b><i>Afterpiece<\/i><\/b>, Amos Why and Frankie Chung\u2019s<b><i>\u00a0The Dating Menu<\/i><\/b><i>,<\/i>\u00a0and Joey Wu\u2019s\u00a0<b><i>Bird of Paradise<\/i><\/b>. The festival will also present crowd-pleasers and cult classics rarely screened in the U.S., including Pang Ho-cheung\u2019s gleefully dark\u00a0<b><i>You Shoot, I Shoot<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai\u2019s mahjong comedy\u00a0<b><i>Fat Choi Spirit<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b>(copresented by Green Tile Social Club).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">NYAFF\u00a0also presents a Filmmaker in Focus series dedicated to legendary Hong Kong director Andrew Lau, who co-directed\u00a0<i>Infernal Affairs\u00a0<\/i>and served as cinematographer on much of\u00a0<i>Chungking Express<\/i>. The retrospective features three films: his latest hit\u00a0<b><i>The<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<b><i>Dumpling Queen<\/i><\/b>, the 1998 landmark fantasy epic<b>\u00a0<\/b><b><i>The Storm Riders<\/i><\/b>, and the car-racing classic<b>\u00a0<\/b><b><i>Initial D<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b>in a newly restored 20th-anniversary 4K edition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Japan\u2019s Bold Visions<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">NYAFF\u2019s Japanese lineup spans murder mysteries, revenge comedies, punk rock history, and nightmare-fueled horror. Tomorowo Taguchi\u2019s<b>\u00a0<\/b><b><i>Street Kingdom<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b>captures the energy and rebellion of Tokyo\u2019s Rockers scene, while a different kind of nail-biting energy surrounds Eisuke Naito\u2019s (<i>Liverleaf<\/i>) survival thriller\u00a0<b><i>Higuma!! The Killer Bear<\/i><\/b>. The horror continues as Koji Shiraishi (<i>Noroi<\/i>) brings the viral horror phenomenon\u00a0<b><i>Kinki<\/i><\/b>\u00a0to the big screen. As part of\u00a0NYAFF\u2019s 25th anniversary Rediscoveries program, Takashi Miike\u2019s\u00a0<b><i>Ichi the Killer<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b>returns, giving audiences another chance to experience one of Japan\u2019s most notorious cult classics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Korean Cinema\u2019s New Directions<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Korean films in addition to\u00a0<i>Colony<\/i>\u00a0include two films that reckon with the Jeju 4\u00b73 Incident, the 1947\u201354 massacres in which tens of thousands of Jeju islanders were killed, and which South Korea spent decades unable to speak about: Ha Myung-mi\u2019s period epic\u00a0<b><i>Hallan<\/i><\/b>, led by commercial star<b>\u00a0Kim Hyang-gi<\/b>, and\u00a0<b><i>My Name<\/i><\/b>, veteran Chung Ji-young\u2019s drama of silenced trauma with\u00a0<b>Yeom Hye-ran<\/b>\u00a0(<i>No Other Choice<\/i>). When\u00a0<i>My Name\u00a0<\/i>premiered in Korea, the President of South Korea was in the audience. Chung, the conscience of Korean political cinema since\u00a0<i>White Badge<\/i>, will attend in person. Both films carry the support of the Jeju 4\u00b73 Peace Foundation, and they run alongside the festival\u2019s Jeju 4\u00b73 exhibition.\u00a0<b><i>My Sassy Girl<\/i><\/b>\u00a0comes back in 4K, and\u00a0<b><i>Journey There<\/i><\/b>, Kim Jin-yu\u2019s drama about grief, music, and reconnection, pairs Kim Hye-ok with\u00a0<b>Justin H. Min<\/b>\u00a0(<i>After Yang<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Beef<\/i>,<i>\u00a0The Umbrella Academy<\/i>), a Korean-American actor crossing into Korean-language cinema, who will also appear in person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>The Cutting Edge of East and Southeast Asian Cinema<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Highlights from the Taiwanese lineup include Giddens Ko\u2019s martial arts comedy\u00a0<b><i>Kung Fu<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and Lee Yi-shan\u2019s Golden Horse-winning debut\u00a0<b><i>A Dance with Rainbows<\/i><\/b>, as well as\u00a0<b><i>I Blew Out the Candles Before Making a Wish<\/i><\/b>\u00a0starring Kai Ko.
