Beginning his career in the 1950s as an assistant to legends like Yasujirō Ozu (Tokyo Story), his early youth-oriented films (many written by the radical poet, theater-maker, and firebrand Shuji Terayama) established Shinda as an early master of the Japanese New Wave. By the mid-to-late 60s, his work had become increasingly stylized: the icy wide-screen of Pale Flower and the Noh theater of Double Suicide. Shinoda would go on to amass a career spanning five decades and global acclaim. This series gathers 12 films from across a half-century—many in new restorations and prints imported from Japan—that reveal Shinoda as one of the supreme masters of Japanese cinema.

Tickets are available below link.

BAM | Masahiro Shinoda

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1774669342741533" data-ad-slot="1211148813" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Featuring:

©Courtesy of BAM

Dry Lake (1960)

Directed by Masahiro Shinoda (1960)

With Shinichirō Mikami, Shima Iwashita, Kayoko Honoo, Kazuya Kosaka

35mm print imported from Japan (courtesy of the Japan Foundation)

Released amid protests against the 1960 United States–Japan Security Treaty (which culminated in hundreds of thousands surrounding the Japanese National Diet building), Shinoda’s study of a young student radical marks an early blast of the Japanese New Wave’s youth energy. Originally written for the bunraku (puppet theater) tradition, Shinoda’s film uses human actors—but also integrates the black-clad puppeteers of bunraku. Following the travails of an Osaka merchant and his courtesan lover, Shinoda’s film is simultaneously indebted to tradition and bracingly modern. With a score by avant garde composer Toru Takemitsu and equally stylized sets and costumes, the film stands amongst the most daring statements of the Japanese New Wave.

UPCOMING Screenings

Thu, Jun 25 at 7PM

RUNNING TIME : 105min

VENUE : Peter Jay Sharp Building
BAM Rose Cinemas

FORMAT : 35mm

LANGUAGE : In Japanese with English subtitles

TICKET INFORMATION : General Admission: $17, Members: $12, Please note: A $2 handling fee per ticket will be added to your order.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1774669342741533" data-ad-slot="1211148813" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

©Courtesy of BAM

Silence (1971)

Directed by Masahiro Shinoda (1971)

With David Lampson, Mako, Eiji Okada, Rokkō Toura

35mm print imported from Japan (courtesy National Film Archive of Japan)

“Adapted from Shusaku Endo’s novel, and preceding Scorsese’s adaptation by nearly 50 years, Silence follows two young Portuguese Jesuit priests who sneak into 17th-century Japan to locate their missing mentor.
