Netflix<\/a> dropped a new trailer for Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s film, “La Bola Negra<\/strong><\/a>” which commences with a family secret and concludes with the sea’s rise on a rugged shoreline.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s official selection for the Best International Feature prize at the Academy Awards, “La Bola Negra<\/strong>” came to life when Calvo read La piedra oscura, a 2013 play by Alberto Conejero. \u201cWe had seen the play 10 years earlier, but rereading it with cinema in mind changed everything,\u201d Ambrossi says. \u201cSuddenly, in one night, the structure came to us: three timelines. It felt instinctive.\u201d<\/p>\n

A peek at those three timelines can be seen in the trailer. The first follows Carlos (Milo Quifes), a young man trying to become a member at an exclusive social club; the second follows Sebasti\u00e1n (Guitarricadelafuente), a soldier in the fascist army during the Spanish Civil War; and the third follows Alberto (Carlos Gonz\u00e1lez), a contemporary historian working to unravel a secret in his family\u2019s past. As the film proceeds, these three generations of gay men begin to inform one another, weaving a rich tapestry that unfolds in 1932, 1937, and 2017. To tell these stories, Calvo and Ambrossi (known popularly as Los Javis) assembled a cast of actors, musicians, and first-time performers.<\/p>\n

Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente takes center stage, in a role that Ambrossi and Calvo knew he had to play. \u201cWe were already big fans of Guitarrica\u2019s work,\u201d Calvo says. \u201cWith the sensitivity he brings onstage and his beautiful songs and performances, we knew he could do it, that he could act. He\u2019s already telling a story when he\u2019s singing. So we called him and said, \u2018Do you want to do it?\u2019 And he said, \u2018Well, with you, yes, but I don\u2019t know how to do it.\u2019 We were like, \u2018Don\u2019t worry.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Guitarricadelafuente also wrote original music for the film, including \u201cLa Nieve,\u201d the ballad that underscores the trailer. \u201cI didn\u2019t want the song to feel like something placed over the film to explain the scene,\u201d Guitarricadelafuente says, of writing the song. \u201cI wanted it to come from the same emotional place as the characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLa Bola Negra<\/strong>\u201d, which recently won the People\u2019s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival<\/a> (making history as the first Netflix film to take the top prize), draws from both La piedra oscura and from La bola negra, the unfinished manuscript by Spanish playwright Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca (1898\u20131936). \u201cSpain has an extraordinary cultural legacy, but we don\u2019t always carry it forward,\u201d Ambrossi says. \u201cWhat moved me is the idea that many people might discover Lorca through this film. That\u2019s beautiful. Art can act as a bridge between generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

“La Bola Negra<\/strong>” comes to theaters on Oct. 16, 2026 in New York and Los Angeles, rolling out to cities around the United States and Canada over the following weeks. The film lands on Netflix on Dec. 2.<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
