\u201cAlien<\/strong><\/a>\u201d and \u201cTop Gun<\/strong><\/a>\u201d veteran actor Tom Skerritt<\/a>, has passed away. The actor, aged 93, died in Seattle yesterday from natural causes, according to his family’s statement.<\/p>\n

His family has issued a statement: \u201cWe are heartbroken by his loss. While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humour, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and the love he brought into our lives. He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world and helping others find and share their own voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

His breakthrough came when he appeared in \u201cM*A*S*H<\/strong><\/a>\u201d as Southern surgeon Duke Forrest in 1970, which led to work in films like \u201cWild Rovers<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBig Bad Mama<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThieves Like Us<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cIce Castles<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cCheech & Chong\u2019s Up in Smoke<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some of his notable works like \u201cThe Turning Point<\/strong>\u201d, he portrayed Shirley MacLaine\u2019s husband, he was also Tom Cruise\u2019s Air Force instructor Mike \u201cViper\u201d Metcalf in “Top Gun” (1986) and was memorable as a minister and the patriarch of the MacLean family in Robert Redford\u2018s rhythmic “A River Runs Through It<\/strong>” (1992). Other notable film roles include \u201cContact<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Dead Zone<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cSpaceCamp<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Turning Point<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cHarold and Maude<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cTears of the Sun<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cSteel Magnolias<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Rookie<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Other Sister<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cRedemption Road<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cDesperation<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201cTed<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The feature work opened many TV opportunities as well, including a recurring role as Kirstie Alley’s ex-boss on “Cheers<\/strong>,” a guest appearance as Sally Field’s late husband on “Brothers and Sisters,<\/strong>” and a particularly Emmy-nominated lead role as a sheriff in a small town on David E. Kelley’s “Picket Fences<\/strong>” in the ’90s.<\/p>\n

He guest-starred on many series like \u201cGunsmoke<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Fugitive<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cLaramie<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBonanza<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cWagon Train<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cVoyage to the Bottom of the Sea<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Time Tunnel<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cMannix<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cKolchak: The Night Stalker<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBaretta<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cChicago Hope<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe West Wing<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cWill & Grace<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cLeverage<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cMadam Secretary<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n
