All right.

But that’s not the point. The point is when doing that scene, okay, the danger, as is the danger doing Heavy Metal, is I wonder if they’re gonna laugh me off the stage.

Ben Stiller : Really?

William Shatner : Oh, I mean, I wonder. Here’s my first question

William Shatner : Okay. So wait a minute. Do you know what regolith is?

Ben Stiller :No.

William Shatner : You don’t know what regolith is?

Ben Stiller : No.

William Shatner : Okay. That’s the debris from asteroids that have crashed on the moon and turned to dust. So the dust is regolith, and it’s kind of glassy. It’s kind of made of the debris of outer space, and it’s dust, and it clings like flour.

And it chokes everything, and it chokes your nose and… But it also can be heated and made into metallic things that can repair spaceships. So the moon is both deadly in its dust and full of, of, um, possibilities of regeneration of things that we’re moving into space with. Well, that was shot in the tectonic line of..

Ben Stiller : Vasquez Rocks?

William Shatner : Vasquez Rocks. So Vasquez Rocks doesn’t have regolith, but it has all this shattered glass and rocks, and it’s really awful.

And to fall into that, you know, it’s like, “What have I done?” “Why am I here?” “I want to go back to that terrible hotel.” So, so that fight sequence was just so bad. But City On The Edge Of Forever, is that something people bring up to you?

William Shatner : Well, the City On The Edge Of Forever is a really… There are certain Star Trek episodes that are really fabulously written.

Ben Stiller : Yeah.

William Shatner : The concept, the guy in the black and white, and the guy in the white and black-to show you the stupidity of racial, racial-

Ben Stiller : That’s another, that’s the episode right where-

William Shatner : They’re the same thing.

Ben Stiller : Right

William Shatner : You know? And so the science fiction ideas which are based on truth-

Ben Stiller : By the way, that was so good, ’cause that episode, it blew my mind when I first saw it, that they were so against him because he was black on one side and white on the other.

William Shatner : Right. And the other guy was white, yeah.

Ben Stiller : Yeah. Honestly, one of the best ways of explaining how ridiculous and stupid racism is.

William Shatner : I think so too… exactly my point. Exactly.

Ben Stiller : Falling in love with Edith Keeler.

William Shatner : Yeah.

Ben Stiller : People love this episode— I think it’s Kirk sacrificing his own, his own personal love of his life-

William Shatner : Yeah

Ben Stiller : For the greater good, ’cause he knows that that has to happen. When you got an episode like that, and you open up the script and you, and you break it down, what, what are you thinking as an actor?

William Shatner : Well, because we all relate to, “I wish I had turned left instead of right. I wish I had chosen to do that and not chosen to do that,” whatever that choice was. Because we all live with that question, you know?

“Why did I, why did I marry that girl?” “And not that one?” “Maybe I’ll marry that one as well.” Uh, it’s just the choices you make in life are done with such accident.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1774669342741533" data-ad-slot="1211148813" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Ben Stiller : Yeah.

William Shatner : Whether you think you know what you’re doing, you don’t.

Ben Stiller : Right.

William Shatner : So you don’t know the exigencies that life will visit. You don’t know what lightning strikes will happen to you as you go through life, so that all your choices are blind. And you think, “That choice I made, if only I hadn’t done it.” And if you live with that, you live with that regret, you alter your joy of your life.

You’ve got to live with the choices you made realizing that the choices you made were done with the amount of knowledge you had at that moment. The moment you’ve made a choice to go to the left instead of the right, your life has changed. You now have more knowledge.

Ben Stiller : That’s right.

William Shatner : Is, “I made the right choice,” goes, “Oh, God, I wish I had done to the left.” You’re armed with more and different knowledge. So regret is furious.

Regret, you can’t regret. You’ve got to relieve yourself of regret and, and realize you made the choice based on the emotional and factual information you had at the time.

Ben Stiller : Right. McCoy. Leonard McCoy?

William Shatner : Yes. He’s in the mission.

Ben Stiller : Stay right here. Spock! Leonard smoked until it was too late, and he died of emphysema.

And although I didn’t see him in the last moments, I’ve gotta think that that scene was something like what must have happened, because you drown. Oh, you drown. You’re taking your last gasp, and you’re totally conscious. You’re taking your last gasp. I was life imitating fiction.

Ben Stiller : The friendship that you guys had in real life had to-

William Shatner : I loved him.
