This film reteams Almod\u00f3var with actress Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, who earned her first Oscar nomination for his 2006 entry<strong> <em>Volver<\/em><\/strong>, and also stars Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Aitana S\u00e1nchez-Gij\u00f3n, Julieta Serrano and Rossy De Palma. Most of Almod\u00f3var\u2019s recent works have bowed internationally at the Cannes Film Festival, including his previous film,<strong> <em>Pain and Glory<\/em><\/strong>, which went on to earn two Oscar nominations.<\/p>\n<p>From the Venice Film Festival, here\u2019s the plot synopsis for the film, which definitely has echoes of frequent Almod\u00f3var themes explored in past projects: \u201cTwo women, Janis and Ana, coincide in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Thirty-eight years later I am called to open the festival. I cannot explain the joy and the honor, and how much this means to me without falling into complacency.
