Stephen Chbosky’s screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen<\/strong><\/em>, has been selected to open the 46th annual Toronto International Film Festival this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

“There was no question that Dear Evan Hansen<\/strong><\/em> was the ideal film to launch the festival this year,” Cameron Bailey, TIFF\u2019s artistic director and co-head, said<\/a>. “This film is ultimately about healing, forgiveness and reaffirms how connected and essential we all are to one another. We couldn\u2019t think of a more important idea to celebrate this year as we come together once again to share the power and joy of cinema in theaters together.”<\/p>\n

Zhang Yimou\u2019s One Second<\/strong><\/em> will close<\/a> the Canadian event, which is set to run Sept. 9-18.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Every September we invite the whole film world to Toronto, one of the most diverse, movie-mad cities in the world,” Bailey said. “And to have Zhang Yimou\u2019s film here, now, is a true joy.”<\/p>\n

Gala presentations will include<\/a> Kenneth Branagh\u2019s Belfast<\/strong><\/em>; Will Sharpe\u2019s The Electrical Life of Louis Wain;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Michael Showalter\u2019s The Eyes of Tammy Faye;<\/strong><\/em> Alison Klayman\u2019s Jagged<\/strong><\/em>; Edgar Wright\u2019s Last Night in Soho;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Melanie Laurent\u2019s The Man Women\u2019s Bell;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Danis Goulet\u2019s Night Raiders<\/strong><\/em>, Barry Levinson\u2019s The Survivor<\/strong><\/em> and Walt Becker\u2019s Clifford the Big Red Dog<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival will also show <\/span>Denis Villeneuve\u2019s Dune<\/strong><\/em>; <\/span>Clio Barnard\u2019s Ali & Ava<\/strong><\/em>; Terence Davies\u2019 Benediction<\/strong><\/em>; Mia Hansen-Love\u2019s Bergman Island<\/strong><\/em>; Ryusuke Hamaguchi\u2019s Drive My Car<\/strong><\/em>; Michael Pearce\u2019s Encounter<\/strong><\/em>; Antoine Fuqua\u2019s The Guilty;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Maria Schrader\u2019s I\u2019m Your Man<\/strong><\/em>; Phillip Noyce\u2019s Lakewood<\/strong><\/em>; Jacques Audiard\u2019s Paris, 13th District<\/strong><\/em>; Celine Sciamma\u2019s Petite Maman<\/strong><\/em>; Ted Melfi\u2019s The Starling<\/strong><\/em>; Nanni Moretti\u2019s Three Floors<\/strong><\/em> and Joachim Trier\u2019s The Worst Person in the World<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s festival was a virtual affair because of the coronavirus pandemic, while this year\u2019s edition will feature in-person screenings. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
