The upcoming next installment in the popular The Exorcist<\/em><\/strong> franchise is set to be a direct sequel to, and not a reboot of the original 1973 Academy Award-winning horror movie. Filmmaker David Gordon Green, who first garnered widespread success in the genre when he wrote, directed and produced the 2018 Halloween<\/em><\/strong>, shared the news about The Exorcist<\/em><\/strong> while he spoke to GamesRadar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The upcoming drama’s production company, Morgan Creek Entertainment, is supporting the story that Green developed for the new follow-up seriously. The company encouraged the filmmaker to take as much time as he needed to develop the follow-up, since the project received backlash when it was first announced.<\/p>\n

Morgan Creek initially aimed to release the next entry in The Exorcist<\/em><\/strong> franchise later this year. However, the company ultimately decided to push the distribution date back to late next year or or in early 2023, so that Green has enough time to develop the story.<\/p>\n

While further discussing the new movie, which is currently untitled, Green shared that “The Exorcist<\/em><\/strong> has been written. That was one of my pandemic projects. It’s not inaccurate [that it will be a sequel to the original film]. I like all the Exorcist<\/strong><\/em> movies. And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into the acceptable mythology for what I’m doing. It’s not like I’m saying, ‘Pretend that The Exorcist 2 never happened.’ That’s fine to exist. They’re all fine to exist, and I enjoy all of them.”<\/p>\n

Like the scribe-helmer mentioned, the next installment in The Exorcist<\/em><\/strong> series has been written, and won’t be a complete retcon of the original movie or its initial sequels. Morgan Creek also said in the past that it would never remake the first film.<\/p>\n

“It’s another fun legacy to be a part of…That one is a lot of research, rather than just impulsive screenwriting. That’s one that you talk to a lot of people. You read a lot of books, and do a [lot] of interviews…It’s a lot more than I anticipated getting into it. And I guess I was naive to think that. But it was very exhilarating to be involved in a lot of those conversations that you find yourself in,” Green also mentioned while he talked about writing the upcoming sequel, which will be a collaboration between Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.<\/p>\n

The original Exorcist<\/em><\/strong> was directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty, who also scribed the 1971 book of the same name that the film is based on. The drama was a box office and critical hit upon its initial theatrical release, in part for its originality, performances and Friedkin’s direction.<\/p>\n

The Exorcist<\/em><\/strong> is also known for turning actress Linda Blair into a household name. She famously portrayed the character of Regan, a teenage girl who required help from the title character after she became demonically possessed, in the movie.<\/p>\n

Blair later reprised her famous role in the series’ first follow-up, Exorcist II: The Heretic<\/strong><\/em>, but has never returned to star in a subsequent sequel. Green, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek haven’t shared if the performer will return to the franchise, or any other casting news yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Besides Green’s revelation that the next installment in The Exorcist<\/strong><\/em> series is a direct follow-up to the original film, Forbes<\/a> has also announced that the feature is set to return to Halloween Horror Nights. The popular maze, which first opened in 2016, is the latest attraction that has been announced to take part at Universal Studios Hollywood. The revitalized maze will allow guests to witness the iconic experiences that terrorized Regan and her mother, Chris, who was played by Ellen Burstyn.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
