Kevin Costner\u2019s 1995 sci-fi drama, Waterworld,<\/strong><\/em> is getting a sequel series.<\/span>“We’re going to do the streaming version of that movie, the continuation of that movie,” producer John Davis told<\/a> Collider.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’re not 100 percent sure on the approach to the show.<\/p>\n

But definitely, we’re in the building stages right now,” added John Fox, Davis’ producing partner.\u00a0<\/span>The Hollywood Reporter confirmed<\/a> the project is in early development at Universal Content Productions where the team has a first-look deal. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is unclear whether Costner, who has been starring in the Paramount Network’s western Yellowstone<\/strong><\/em> in recent years, will be part of the Waterworld <\/strong><\/em>follow-up.\u00a0<\/span>Davis and Fox were producers on the post-apocalyptic movie about a sailor (Costner) who can breathe underwater and joins with other survivors to try to find dry land in a world where the polar ice caps have melted and water covers nearly every surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The critically panned film had an enormous budget for its time, $175 million, but suffered setbacks because of a hurricane. <\/span>Co-starring Jeanne Tripplehorn and Tina Majorino, i<\/span>t earned $264 million at the global box office and became a hit as a home-entertainment staple.<\/span><\/p>\n
