Acclaimed filmmaker Lilly Wachowski has finally revealed why she decided not to take part in the upcoming fourth installment of her popular Matrix<\/em><\/strong> franchise. During the Television Critics Association Summer Tour virtual panel for her Showtime television show, Work in Progress<\/em><\/strong>, last week, she delved into the reasons why she moved on from the hit, Oscar-winning sci-fi-action film series.<\/p>\n

While speaking about the third Matrix<\/em><\/strong> sequel, The Matrix: Resurrections<\/em><\/strong>, Lilly noted that her sister, Lana Wachowski, directed the anticipated feature on her own. The duo co-wrote and helmed the previous three entries in the franchise, under their collective filmmaking name at the time, The Wachowskis Brothers. (The initial three movies, The Matrix<\/i><\/strong> (1999), The Matrix Reloaded<\/strong> <\/i>and The Matrix Revolution<\/i><\/strong> <\/i>(both 2003), were all released before Lily and Lana publicly revealed they’re both trans women; Lily transitioned in 2016, four years after her sister.)<\/p>\n

While discussing why seh stepped away from The Matrix<\/strong><\/em> series, Lilly admitted during the panel (via EW<\/a>): “That’s a tough one. “I got out of my transition and was just completely exhausted because we had made Cloud Atlas<\/em><\/strong> and Jupiter Ascending<\/em><\/strong>, and the first season of (their sci-fi Netflix show,) Sense8<\/em><\/strong>, back-to-back-to-back.<\/p>\n

“We were posting one, and prepping the other at the exact same time. So you’re talking about three 100-plus days of shooting for each project, and so, coming out and just being completely exhausted, my world was like, falling apart to some extent even while I was like, you know, cracking out of my egg,” the filmmaker continued.<\/p>\n

“So I needed this time away from this industry. I needed to reconnect with myself as an artist and I did that by going back to school and painting,” Lily added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The filmmaker, who’s currently showrunning, executive producing, writing and directing the second season of Work in Progress<\/strong><\/em>, explained that she decided not to take part in The Matrix: Resurrections <\/i><\/strong>before the second season of Sense8<\/em><\/strong> debuted in 2017. When Lana came up with an idea for the fourth Matrix<\/em><\/strong> movie, Lilly felt the need to move on to new things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“[Lana] had come up with this idea for another Matrix<\/em><\/strong> movie, and we had this talk, and it was actually \u2014 we started talking about it in between [our] dad dying and [our] mom dying, which was like five weeks apart,” Lilly said. “And there was something about the idea of going backward and being a part of something that I had done before that was expressly unappealing.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t want to have gone through my transition and gone through this massive upheaval in my life, the sense of loss from my mom and dad, to want to go back to something that I had done before, and sort of [walk] over old paths that I had walked in, felt emotionally unfulfilling, and really the opposite \u2014 like I was going to go back and live in these old shoes, in a way. And I didn’t want to do that,” Lilly also revealed.<\/p>\n

For Lilly, working on Work in Progress<\/em><\/strong>, a comedy that follows the life of actress Abby McEnany’s character of Abby, a 46-year-old who suffers from depression, seemed like the place she needed to be. “It felt like a new thing that I could go do and be myself in, more than go back and do the same thing that I sort of did before,” Lilly divulged during the panel. “Lana made [The<\/em><\/strong> Matrix: Resurrections<\/em><\/strong>] for different reasons\u2026 I can’t speak for her, but that’s what I was feeling at the time.”<\/p>\n
