Monday of this week saw the presentation of the 31st<\/sup> annual Gotham Awards at a gala ceremony in at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the city that\u2019s been home to the independent film extravaganza since 1991.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sponsored by the Brooklyn-based Gotham Film & Media Institute, the gender-neutral awards are designed to provide early acknowledgment to groundbreaking independent films and television series.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This year, for the first time, the documentary feature category was open to submissions from outside the United States.<\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Lost Daughter<\/strong>\u201d was the clear winner this time, winning four coveted prizes: best feature, best screenplay, and breakthrough awards for director\u00a0 <\/span>Maggie Gyllenhaal and lead performer Olivia Colman and best screenplay. In accepting her award, Gyllenhall was quoted as saying how important it was \u201cto see women that actually look like their wives or their sisters or their mothers up on screen. I think the lineup of films being celebrated here tonight says \u2018Yeah, it fuckin\u2019 is.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Other prizes went to \u201cSquid Game<\/strong>\u201d and Apple\u2019s \u201cCODA<\/strong>.\u201d In addition, tribute awards were bestowed on director Jane Campion and Magnolia Pictures mogul Eamonn Bowles. An ensemble tribute prize went to the cast of \u201cThe Harder They Fall<\/strong>\u201d with performer tributes awarded to Kristen Stewart and Peter Dinklage.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the full list of winners and nominees for the event that the Gotham Film & Media Institute describes as \u201cthe first honors of the film awards season.\u201d The Institute is head by producer Jeffrey Sharp as executive director.<\/p>\n
