The festival is set to take place in a hybrid format, including in-person in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah, as well as through online screenings and Satellite Screens venues across the U.S.

Sundance will begin in Park City with 11 opening night movies, including Jesse Eisenberg’s directing debut, the relationship comedy, When You Finish Saving the World. Other selections to be featured during the opening night are Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Martins’ Marte Um (Mars One) and The Princess, a documentary profile of Diana Spencer.

Like this year’s edition of the festival, next year’s Premiere section will feature a large selection of non-fiction work, including a movie from Ramin Bahrani, 2nd Chance, about the inventor of the bulletproof vest. The Midnight selection will premiere Meet Me in the Bathroom, which chronicles about the early 2000s music scene, during Sundance’s opening night.

Another notable part of next month’s festival is the Premiere section, which will feature a number of foreign-language features. One anticipated film in the section is Final Cut, a zombie feature from Oscar winning writer-director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist). The movie is a French remake of the 2017 Japanese feature, One Cut of the Dead, and stars Romain Duris and Bérénice Bejo.

Sundance 2022 will also screen a multitude of anticipated documentaries, including W. Kamau Bell’s We Need to Talk about Cosby, which chronicles the rise and fall of Bill Cosby. Kanye West will also be featured a non-fiction movie, jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, which will include never-seen footage. Another noteworthy documentary that will play during the festival is Descendant, during which director Margaret Brown explores the last slave ship to deliver slaves to the U.S. to her Mobile, Alabama hometown.

Sundance has become known for reflecting the current state of the film industry, and 2022 will be no exception. The festival is adapting to the COVID landscape with its hybrid edition, which is combing last year’s successful virtual platform with a live, in-person event in Utah.

Next year’s hybrid version of Sundance is being led by director Tabitha Jackson, in her second edition. Director of programming Kim Yutani is also returning to Sundance, for her fourth edition of America’s leading indie film festival.

For next year’s edition of Sundance, Jackson was able to convince content providers to make their content available both in theaters and online. She admitted she was surprised that making that a condition of festival acceptance turned out to be a “frictionless negotiation. This community get it. People are willing to come along with us. It seems our success is important to the vibrancy of what everyone is trying to do.”

The full list of projects that will be playing during the Sundance Film Festival 2022, which includes 82 feature-length films representing 28 countries, is listed below.

U.S. DRAMATIC COMPETITION

Presenting the world premieres of fiction feature films, the Dramatic Competition offers festivalgoers a first look at groundbreaking new voices in American independent film.

892 / U.S.A.
