Both films are produced by Broke and Bones \u2014 a company founded by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, best known for their work. on science fiction anthology series<strong> <i>Black Mirror.<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The narrative formula is almost identical to the one of the previous film: retracing the year in chronological order from January to December, through images of real-life events alternating with interviews made to fictional scientists, influencers, average citizens and journalists. The different opinions that emerge are always over the top. Conspiracy theories of anti-vaxxers claimed the existence of a \u201cplandemic\u201d, in parallel to the arrival of Covid\u2019s variants \u2014 Delta, Alpha, Omicron \u2014 inspired by the Greek alphabet, despite the \u201cGreeks are already busy making yogurt.\u201d The pandemic influenced also the dating world: a woman explained that on the Apps, to be safe, she swiped only men wearing masks in their photos.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The entertainment world also characterised 2021, from Oprah\u2019s interview with Harry and Megan, to the success of <i>Bridgerton<\/i>, that to some viewers, \u201cshows how wealthy good-looking people had sex in the past,\u201d or according to old white men it constitutes \u201ccultural appropriation,\u201d since black people are playing aristocrats during the Regency era. The phenomena of documentaries like <i>Seaspiracy<\/i> and <i>My Octopus Teacher<\/i> or the successful television series <i>Squid Game <\/i>spoilt the joy of eating seafood. Whilst the death of the Duke of Edinburgh was addressed cheekily referencing to his Royal Highness, as the \u201cDuke of Deadinburgh.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7352\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487-1024x701.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487-1024x701.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487-768x526.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487-218x150.jpg 218w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487-696x476.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487-614x420.jpg 614w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/death-to-2021-1640862487.jpg 1052w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The reportage further includes events like the sentencing of Derek Chauvin, the policeman who killed a defenceless George Floyd in 2020, and natural disasters such as Australia\u2019s mice plague, the biblical floods in Germany and the fire on the ocean surface west of Mexico&#8217;s Yucatan peninsula. Climate change is further confronted with COP26 in Glasgow, that trolls Scots by saying the city is in London.<\/p>\n<p>The return of the Taliban to Afghanistan, with Biden\u2019s decision to have the US troop withdrawal, is explained as \u201cAmerican soldiers wanting to work from home, just like everybody else.\u201d And whilst one country was released from foreign presence, the universe was gradually being colonised by billionaires such as Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos who were ready for the \u201cgentrification of space.\u201d As regards grand events, the Olympics in Tokyo had no live audiences, contrarily to the 93<sup>rd<\/sup> Academy Awards that gathered the usual attendees in a \u201cwoke\u201d key\u2026just like the new Bond movie, <i>No Time to Die<\/i>, \u201c double-O-woke-agent-he-slash-him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7355\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cristin-Milioti-in-Death-To-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"963\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cristin-Milioti-in-Death-To-2021.jpg 963w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cristin-Milioti-in-Death-To-2021-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cristin-Milioti-in-Death-To-2021-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cristin-Milioti-in-Death-To-2021-696x348.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cristin-Milioti-in-Death-To-2021-841x420.jpg 841w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Society\u2019s regression is then attested by Texas\u2019 laws prohibiting abortions, and the UK, US and Australia announcing a historic security pact in the Asia-Pacific to counter China. Big Tech is also part of the story, with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg appearing as a cartoon avatar informing us that someday we will inhabit a 3D virtual world with endless possibilities, and announcing the change of name of his platform to Meta. This followed the moment when whistleblower Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee, leaked tens of thousands of pages of company documents that included how the company\u2019s executives handled politicised lies. But even more ironically \u201cdramatic\u201d than this was how the world stopped, when in October the social network Facebook and its subsidiaries, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Mapillary, and Oculus, became globally unavailable for a period of six to seven hours. As a user says: \u201cit was like being Donald Trump for one afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All this sarcasm makes concessions to nothing and nobody. None are spared from the acerbic and sardonic social critique that tries to exorcise a gruesome year, through the tongue-in-cheek wit and humour that only the British possess. Although it may come across as a d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu to <i>Death To 2020,<\/i> with the idea that laughter will save the world,<i> Death To 2021<\/i> adds a note of hope and entrusts it to vaccines. Italian by blood, British by upbringing, fond of Japanese culture since the age of 7, once a New Yorker always a New Yorker, and an avid traveller, Chiara collaborates with international magazines and radio-television networks. She is also a visual artist, whose eco-works connect to her use of language: the title of each painting is inspired by the materials she upcycles on canvas. Her \u2018Material Puns\u2019 have so far been exhibited in four continents, across ten countries.
