Also screened will be 111 short films, which includes 24 music videos, 11 episodic premieres, six episodic pilots, 29 XR Experience projects (formerly known as Virtual Cinema), and 19 Title Design Competition entries..

SXSW’s director Janet Pierson was quoted in industry media this week as saying, “Our focus is very much being in person. People really do miss gathering together.”

Despite this optimistic scenario, masks will be required at all SXSW conference session rooms, exhibition spaces, and registration areas, though individual venues will be able to determine this on their own initiative.

Organizers are buoyed by a statement this week announced by Austin Mayor Steve Adler that projects new Covid cases will decrease and flatten by the time of the mid-March screenings, if people continue to be vaccinated and observe masking and social-distancing protocols. Proof of vaccination or negative Covid tests will be required at all in-person events. Masks are not mandated in Texas.Interestingly, some of the documentaries to be screened make references to the pandemic, such as characters wearing face masks.

The Festival’s opening, on March 11, will showcase “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a comedic feature by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. FX’s “Atlanta,” starring Donald Glover, LaKeith Stanfield, and Brian Tyree Henry, will be screened on closing night, a precedent-breaking event since SXSW typically screens series premiers only. As Pierson explained, “We didn’t want to open the door to season premieres because there are so many. But we’re such big fans of this show that when the opportunity came up, it was just too exciting.”

For the full lineup of this year’s SXSW Festival, please visit https://www.sxsw.com/festivals/film/lineup/

HEADLINERS

Big names, big talent: Headliners bring star power to SXSW, featuring red carpet premieres and gala film events with major and rising names in cinema.

Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood
Director/Screenwriter: Richard Linklater, Producers: Richard Linklater, Tommy Pallotta, Mike Blizzard, Femke Wolting, Bruno Felix
A coming-of-age story set in the suburbs of Houston, Texas in the summer of 1969, centered around the historic Apollo 11 moon landing.
