{"id":8440,"date":"2022-02-13T17:07:25","date_gmt":"2022-02-13T22:07:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=8440"},"modified":"2023-12-12T06:12:21","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T11:12:21","slug":"back-to-this-day-review-seira-maedas-poignant-film-about-loss-transition-and-consolation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=8440","title":{"rendered":"Back to That Day : Review \/ Seira Maeda\u2019S Poignant Film  About Loss, Transition, and Consolation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Comparisons may be odious, but I couldn\u2019t help but thinking of Yasujiro Ozu\u2019s <i>shomingeki<\/i> films (like his so-called \u201cNoriko trilogy\u201d) while watching <strong><i>Back to That Day<\/i><\/strong>, a remarkable new release by the young director Seira Maeda of the Chicago Japan Film Collective.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While there is only a hint of Ozu\u2019s cinematographic style here, the 26-year-old Maeda instinctively captures the poignancy of loss and transition in her offering, honoring her viewers, as did Ozu, with a transcendental sense of consolation and hope in the wake of unspeakable grief.<\/p>\n<p>The central character in this sensitively wrought film is Manami (Reina Matsui), a 30-year-old aspiring playwright consumed with guilt and ambiguity over the sudden death of her younger sister Nao (Miwako Kakei).
