Marvel Netflix fans are mourning the fact that five of their shows are being dropped as of March 1: Daredevil<\/strong>, Iron Fist<\/strong>, Jessica Jones<\/strong>, Luke Cage<\/strong><\/i>,\u00a0Punisher <\/i><\/strong>and The Defenders<\/strong>.<\/i><\/p>\n

The titles were part of an interconnected series about an array of Marvel Comics characters who try to counter a sinister plot against New York City. These shows are often described as the \u201cMarvel Street-Level Heroes\u201d or \u201cMarvel Knights\u201d series.<\/p>\n

An ominous posting on the Netflix.com website puts it this way:\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cLast day to watch on Netflix: February 28. Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver (“Ghostbusters,” “Aliens”) goes dark as the cunning and merciless Alexandra.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, despite this obituary, some industry sources say the discards might eventually be reincarnated on Disney+ once legal wrangling between Disney and Netflix has been ironed out. Last week, Entertainment Weekly<\/i> <\/a>reported that \u201cthe rights to these projects are reverting back to Disney as Netflix’s license has ended, though Disney has not made any announcements regarding premiere dates.\u201d As of press time, Disney had not replied to EW\u2019s request for comments.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also being speculated that Disney wants to focus more on original Marvel content than recycling series (like the five mentioned above) that were co-created with other producers. And\u00a0<\/span>perhaps that Disney+ wants to dangle them as teasers that would be released later, once viewers\u2019 appetites had been artfully whetted. Netflix does not release specific statistics about viewership.<\/p>\n

Of the five shows, Daredevil<\/strong><\/i> consistently garnered the most positive feedback from critics, who pointed to the well-crafted scripts and stellar performances by the likes of Charlie Cox, Karen Page, Elden Henson, Scott Glenn, and Rosario Dawson. In a survey of dozens of reviews, The Defenders<\/i> <\/strong>and The Punisher<\/i><\/strong> were less successful in capturing positive critical acclaim.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
