The film with the biggest haul was Dune<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which won six of its ten nominations.<\/p>\n

Notable statistics include supporting actor Troy Kotsur becoming the second-ever deaf actor to win an Oscar, following his costar Marlee Matlin\u2019s victory for Children of a Lesser God<\/em> <\/strong>thirty-five years ago, and Ariana DeBose triumphing for the same role that won Rita Moreno an Oscar in West Side Story<\/em><\/strong><\/a> sixty years ago. Kenneth Branagh won his first Oscar, for Best Original Screenplay for Belfast<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, after receiving nominations in seven separate categories over the past three decades.<\/p>\n

The event started with a live outdoor musical performance led by Beyonc\u00e9 of the nominated song Be Alive<\/em> from King Richard<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, and included a number of star-studded moments with non-film celebrities. The show appeared to be heavily focused on attracting ratings, which led to the cutting of eight categories from the live ceremony, with trophies handed out ahead of the televised ceremony and the winners\u2019 speeches edited into the broadcast.<\/p>\n

It was therefore puzzling to see bits about seat fillers when the show was running well over three hours.<\/p>\n

While some jokes landed well, an uncomfortable moment arose when Will Smith went up on stage to slap presenter Chris Rock for making a crack about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith\u2019s shaved head and then swore at him.<\/p>\n
