HBO Max is reportedly developing “It”\u00a0<\/strong>prequel series,\u00a0\u201cWelcome to Derry<\/strong>,\u201d which set in the fictional small town from the works of Stephen King.<\/p>\n

Set in the 1960s, “Welcome to Derry” will take audiences back to the fictional town of Derry, Maine\u00a0to focus on\u00a0the events that led up to 2017’s It: Part One, which was based on the iconic horror novel by Stephen King. The story is also said to include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.<\/p>\n

Andy Muschietti, who directed \u201cIt: Part One\u201d and 2019\u2019s \u201cIt: Part Two,\u201d is attached to executive produce the series along with his sister\/producer Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. According to sources, Muschiettis developed the story with Fuchs and Fuchs wrote the script. Andy would also direct the first episode if the project goes into the series. Warner Bros. Television is the studio behind the project, since WB having produced the two films.<\/p>\n

If the project is greenlit , it could become a series that rely on an existing WB film franchise. Another project would be focused on Colin Farrell\u2019s limited \u201cPenguin\u201d series from \u201cThe Batman,\u201d although a planned series about the Gotham PD (and Arkham Asylum) has stalled in development for now.<\/p>\n

The two new \u201cIt\u201d films collectively grossed over $1.1 billion at the global box office upon their release, with the first film taking place 27 years after the events of the first with a new adult cast taking over from the kids in part one. Stephen King\u2019s \u201cIt\u201d was previously adapted into a two-part miniseries for ABC back in 1990, featuring Tim Curry\u2019s as Pennywise.<\/p>\n

In 2019,\u00a0IT\u00a0and\u00a0It Chapter Two\u00a0director Andy Muschietti hinted at more\u00a0IT\u00a0when he told\u00a0Gizmodo<\/a>\u00a0that there’s a “whole mythology to the book” about Pennywise, the trans-dimensional entity that has long haunted Derry. “Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore. It has been on Earth for millions of years.<\/p>\n

He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material,” Muschietti said at the time. “It’s always exciting to think of eventually exploring this mythology. It’s very exciting. But, for now, there’s nothing on the table.”<\/p>\n
