Focus Features and StudioCanal finally released the full trailer for ”Back to Black,” the long-gestating biopic of Amy Winehouse, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Marisa Abela, an actress from Industry, portrays the late singer in her rise from a rebellious teenager in London to a tangled figure of jazz and pop. The trailer focuses on her bloody-minded approach to her career, and the people who supported her along the way.

Her signature work is her ‘Back to Black’ album, which also includes widely popular, and her immensely popular song ‘Rehab’. Taylor-Johnson directs from a script by Matt Greenhalgh (“Control”) and has the full support of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing, and The Amy Winehouse Estate. Winehouse and Taylor-Johnson first met and became friends along Camden’s High Street scene at the time. The Winehouse family signed a deal with produces to make a film in 2018, and shooting was completed in 2023.

Even though Winehouse passed away in 2011, her untimely death didn’t deter her from becoming one of the most popular recording artists in recent history, selling over 30 million records worldwide and generating over 80 million streams per month.

Winehouse already got the documentary treatment in 2015 by way of Amy, Asif Kapaida’s more probing documentary, which showcased the singer’s struggles with addiction and malign influences before her death from alcohol poisoning in 2011. 

Performance coach Anne-Marie Speed recently spoke about the demand on Abela in her portrayal of Winehouse, saying: “It’s full-time preparation, it’s like an athlete and people really underestimate how physical voice production can be.”

The film was written by Matt Greenhalgh and drew inspiration from “Amy’s deeply personal and honest lyrics.” Starring opposite Abela are Jack O’Connell as Winehouse’s boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil and Eddie Marsan as her father Mitch.

Back to Black now hits U.S. theaters on May 17, a week later than previously　announced. Made with the blessing of the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
