Edward Berger Will Reportedly Direct New ‘Bourne’ Film with Matt Damon

Director Edward Berger has reportedly sealed a deal with Universal Pictures to write and direct a sixth installment in the Jason Bourne franchise, tentatively titled The Bourne Dilemma. Berger recently wrapped his work on Conclave, which received accolades on the film-festival circuit this fall. The prolific director is also known for Jack, All My Loving, and All Quiet on the Western Front.

No details on plot or casting have officially been announced, but indications are that Matt Damon is in talks to reprise his role in the franchise.

The previous five films in the series were The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy, and Jason Bourne. Doug Liman directed the first of them, Paul Greengrass directed the second, third, and fifth while Tony Gilroy directed the fourth one. The first three of these titles are considered the most impressive.

Released in 2002, The Bourne Identity was based on a 1980 spy-thriller story by Robert Ludlum. It starred Damon as Jason Bourne, a wounded spy suffering from amnesia who was picked up by a fishing boat off the coast of Italy. The plot depicted Bourne’s struggle to regain his identity and escape the assassins who tried to do him in.

Jeff Shannon’s enthusiastic review of the film for amazon.com declares: “The Bourne Identity starts fast and never slows down. The twisting plot revs up in Zurich, where amnesiac CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), with no memory of his name, profession, or recent activities, recruits a penniless German traveler (Run Lola Run‘s Franka Potente) to assist in solving the puzzle of his missing identity.

While his CIA superior (Chris Cooper) dispatches assassins to kill Bourne and thus cover up his failed mission, Bourne exercises his lethal training to leave a trail of bodies from Switzerland to Paris. Director Doug Liman (Go) infuses Ludlum’s intricate plotting with a maverick’s eye for character detail, matching breathtaking action with the humorous, thrill-seeking chemistry of Damon and Potente.”
