Kevin Bacon has been cast in Legendary Pictures’ planned reboot of the 1984 superhero film, The Toxic Avenger. The Golden Globe-winning actor has signed on to play the movie’s villain, opposite Emmy Award-winning actor Peter Dinklage’s title protagonist, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The updated version of The Toxic Avenger will also star Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige. It will be directed by Macon Blair, who also wrote the script. The new film is set to start shooting later this month in Bulgaria.
The new Toxic Avenger is set to follow a struggling janitor who, after being pushed into a drum of toxic waste, becomes horribly disfigured, but also receives super-human size and strength, in the process. He must contend with going from being a shunned outcast to an underdog hero as he races to save his son, friends and community from corruption and greed.
Details about Bacon’s role have not yet been release. However, if the reboot follows the original movie’s story, the actor may be set to portray the city’s corrupt mayor, whose criminal activities are threatened by the title character’s crime-fighting ways.
The upcoming Toxic Avenger reboot won’t be the first time Bacon has played a villainous character. The SAG Award-winning actor has previously portrayed antagonistic roles in several comic book-driven film adaptations, including Sebastian Shaw, a.k.a Dr. Klaus Schmid, in X-Men: First Class.
The original movie, which focused on environmental themes and superhero tropes, spawned a massively successful franchise throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
It was followed by three sequel films, a stage musical, a children’s cartoon television series and a Marvel Comic.
Reports that The Toxic Avenger would receive a remake at a major studio began circulating in 2010. Then in 2013, Arnold Schwarzenegger began discussions about taking on the role of the villain in the reboot. Then in 2018, Legendary Pictures announced that it had acquired the rights to remake the film.
