When your debut film is a horror film as popular and chilling as Talk to Me, you’re gonna have to follow it up with something equally as terrifying. That’s exactly what Danny and Michael Philippou have managed to do with Bring Her Back, a movie that’s very different but also maintains some elements of why Talk to Me was so memorable.
It follows two kids, the vision-impaired Piper (Sora Wong) and her older stepbrother Andy (Billy Barratt), whose father dies, forcing them into the foster care system. Since they don’t want to be split up, they go to live with Sally Hawkins’ Laura, a woman who has experienced great loss but is caring for an odd boy named Ollie (Jonah Wren Phillips), whose violent behavior is especially concerning to Andy. He quickly realizes that Laura really only wanted Piper for reasons that turn out to be quite nefarious in a movie that combines horror elements like witchcraft, possession, and even zombies.
Cinema Daily US spoke with Danny and Michael about their new film, casting the kids around Sally Hawkins, putting them through some crazy stuff, and more.
