German filmmaker Tillman Singer first came onto the scene with 2018’s Luz, a lower-budget horror film that won a number of awards at that year’s Fantastic Fest. His new movie, Cuckoo, has the benefits of a bigger budget and a studio like Neon backing it, which means it’s likely to be seen by many more people.
The movie stars Hunter Schafer from Euphoria as 17-year-old Gretchen, who has arrived at a resort in the German Alps with her extended family when odd occurrences begin happening, mostly revolving around the head of the resort, Herr König, played by Dan Stevens. She soon meets a detective (Jan Bluthardt) who has been looking into those same strange occurrences, but Gretchen just wants to get away from it all.
Cinema Daily US interviewed Singer last week, and spoke to him about how Cuckoo came about, as well as how his film may have inadvertently gotten a boost from the trailer appearing in front of Neon’s mega-horror-hit, Longlegs.
