Icelandic filmmaker Thordur Palsson has made a terrifying feature directorial debut with The Damned, a period film starring Odessa Young as the widow of a fishing boat captain who takes over his duties and has to deal with an unruly crew. After they turn their backs on a sinking ship because they don’t have enough food or supplies for the dying men, that incident leads to all sorts of repercussions, as her crew begin to die off while experiencing strange occurrences.
The movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and it’s such a jarring experience, although it’s not really a horror movie in the classical sense, since it’s haunting and disturbing, but mostly from the situation, which seems very much grounded reality.
Either way, it’s a terrific feature debut for Palsson, and Cinema Daily US writer Edward Douglas had a chance to speak with the filmmaker via Zoom for an interview you can watch above.
The Damned will open in theaters beginning January 3, 2025.
