Relationships can be complicated, and it’s not uncommon for children to keep them secret from their parents for fear of unwanted input and interference. Yet there are situations in which concern is indeed warranted, and the more someone tries to keep something from being known, there’s more of a reason that it shouldn’t remain hidden.
Director Amy Redford’s latest film, What Comes Around, explores one Internet-based romance that takes a sinister and unexpected turn when Beth (Summer Phoenix) learns about the new man her daughter Anna (Grace Van Dien) is dating.
I had the chance to speak with Redford about the process of making this film and navigating its unsettling material while finding the perfect cast to inhabit these complex roles.
We talked about her involvement in the Sundance Institute and launching this film, previously titled Roost, in an equally welcoming environment at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Film summary:
A young love affair becomes a menacing game of cat and mouse where nothing is what it seems in this immersive thriller. A teenager and her cellphone. It’s a worrying combination for many parents, and when Anna (Grace Van Dien) tells her mother, Beth (Summer Phoenix), that she’s met a boy online, Beth goes on full alert. It turns out Anna’s new crush is not a boy but a man — 28 years old, and saying all the right things to a girl on the verge of 17 as she cradles her phone in her bedroom. Then, without invitation, there he is, on the family’s doorstep.
