Titus Kaphar’s Exhibiting Forgiveness is a powerful and moving personal story that the artist-turned-filmmaker made after having conversations with his own father. It stars André Holland (Moonlight) as Tarrell, an artist whose estranged father La’Ron (John Earl Jelks) comes back into his life hoping for redemption, which Tarrell finds difficult.
Oscar nominees Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard) play Tarrell’s wife and mother, respectively, who are hoping that the two men can find some sort of reconciliation, though it’s a difficult situation for all.
Kaphar’s film was well-received out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival in January, and Roadside Attractions is giving Exhibting Forgiveness a nationwide release on Friday, October 18.
Recently, Cinema Daily US spoke with Jelks, as well as Ms. Day and Ms. Ellis-Taylor, interviews that you can watch above and below. We spoke with Jelks about his amazing career, including working with award-winning playwright August Wilson and how Jelks would be interested in appearing in a movie based on one of Wilson’s plays. Day and Ellis-Taylor also talked to us about why they enjoy working together, having just appeared together in Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance on Netflix.
