Most people will know Robert Schwartzman for his music, particularly his rock band Rooney, which recently scored the opening slot for the final tour of Jeff Lynne’s legendary Electric Light Orchestra. In recent years, Schwartzman, part of one of Hollywood’s prolific filmmaking families – his mother is Talia Shire, part of the Coppola family – has branched further into filmmaking, directing five movies. He’s also started his own indie distribution company, Utopia Media.
His latest, The Good Half, stars none other than pop star Nick Jonas as writer Renn Wheeland, who returns home to Cleveland after the death of his mother (Elisabeth Shue) and has to deal with all the family issues he left behind. His extended family includes Brittany Snow as his sister Leigh, Matt Walsh as his father, and David Arquette as his mother’s second husband, all of them trying to deal
Cinema Daily US had a chance to talk to Schwartzman about putting together such a cast and making the movie, this interview conducted last year when The Good Half had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. We also spoke about what he’s been trying to achieve with Utopia, who is releasing the movie in select cities this Friday after a couple Fathom Events screenings back in July.
