One presumes that filmmaker Ishana Night Shyamalan has been around movies for her entire life, considering who her father is, so when she decided to write and direct her first movie, it may not have been too big a surprise.

Based on a novel by A.M. Shine, Shyamalan’s new fantasy-thriller, The Watchers, stars Dakota Fanning as Mina, a young woman living in Ireland, whose car breaks down in the middle of the woods, where she encounters a trio of individuals (Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré, Oliver Finnegan), holed up in a bunker. The bunker inhabitants are being watched and stalked by mysterious creatures, known as “Watchers,” as Mina begins to learn that not everything is what it seems.

Cinema Daily US spoke to Ms. Shyamalan via Zoom a few weeks ago, talking about how Shine’s book inspired her to make her first feature film.

The Watchers opens nationwide on Friday, June 7.
