Exclusive Video Interview with Actor Marque Richardson

Even the seemingly most successful career-driven professionals may not have a clear path of where they wish to lead their personal lives. That’s certainly true for Kerry Washington’s protagonist of Paige Alexander, a family and marriage therapist on Hulu’s critically acclaimed comedy series, UnPrisoned.

Throughout the show’s upcoming second season, Paige continues to struggle with her personal relationships, despite the success throughout her career. She’s still contending with her father, Edwin (Delroy Lindo), moving in with her and wishing to reconcile their relationship after he spent the past 17 years in prison.

In UnPrisoned‘s second season, the Alexander family is still struggling to find happiness and success. Paige’s therapy practice is in trouble, and she must also still be in communication with her father’s case worker, Mal (Marque Richardson). Paige and Mal dated for several episodes in Season 1, until she ended the romance.

Meanwhile, the therapist’s teenage son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana), is still contending with his anxiety. Edwin, meanwhile, is still figuring out how to get his life together outside of prison.

The family’s relationships are more complicated than ever. As a result, they need help, and realize it’s time to call in a professional, other than Paige. So they turn to a family radical healing coach, who throws out all their rules to free them of their issues, old wounds and family secrets that are holding them back.

The comedy is executive produced by Tracy McMillan and Yvette Lee Bowser, as well as Washington and Pilar Savone, through their Simpson Street production company, and Lindo. The series hails from Onyx Collective on Hulu, and is produced by ABC Signature.

Besides producing UnPrisoned, McMillan also created the project. The author and TV writer based the show on her relationship with her own father, Willie Harold McMillan, who served time in prison throughout her life. The trauma that resulted from her at-time strained relationship with her father, including being placed in foster care as a child, helps influence Paige’s journey throughout the series.

Richardson and Rakotohavana generously took the time recently to talk about reprising their roles of Mal and Finn in UnPrisoned‘s upcoming sophomore season during exclusive interviews over Zoom.
