People’s pursuit of a fresh start can often be at odds with others’ recollection of their past decisions and struggles. Their journey for change can also be hindered by society’s perceived notion of how successful they should be at the current stage in their life. That’s certainly true for Kerry Washington’s protagonist of Paige Alexander, a family and marriage therapist, and her recently paroled father on Hulu’s comedy series, UnPrisoned.

Throughout the show’s upcoming second season, Paige continues to struggle with her personal relationships, despite the successes she has garnered throughout her career. She’s  notably still contending with her father, Edwin (Delroy Lindo), moving in with her and wishing to reconcile their relationship after he spent the past 17 years in prison.

The protagonist is also grappling with the realization that her behavior in adulthood has been based on her father’s actions throughout her childhood. As a way to reflect on how the pain from her father’s absence in her childhood has affected her adulthood, she manifests a younger version of herself, Little Paige (Jordyn McIntosh), throughout the series.

In UnPrisoned‘s second season, the Alexander family is still struggling to find happiness and success. Paige’s therapy practice is in trouble, while her teenage son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana), is still contending with his anxiety. Edwin, meanwhile, is still figuring out how to get his life together outside of prison.

The family’s relationships are more complicated than ever. As a result, they need help, and it’s time to call in a professional, other than Paige. So they turn to a family radical healing coach, who throws out all their rules to free them of their issues, old wounds and family secrets that are holding them back.

The comedy is executive produced by Tracy McMillan and Yvette Lee Bowser, as well as Washington and Pilar Savone, through their Simpson Street production company, and Lindo. The show hails from Onyx Collective on Hulu, and is produced by ABC Signature.

Besides producing UnPrisoned, McMillan also created the project. The author and TV writer based the series on her relationship with her own father, Willie Harold McMillan, who served time in prison throughout her life. The trauma that resulted from her at-times strained relationship with her father, including being placed in foster care as a child, helps influence Paige’s journey throughout the show.

McMillan and McIntosh generously took the time recently to talk about UnPrisoned‘s upcoming sophomore season during exclusive video interviews over Zoom.

All eight episodes of UnPrisoned Season 2 will premiere on Hulu on July 17, 2024.
