‘Y2K’ Filmmakers Kyle Mooney, Evan Winter on Recreating 1999 for the Horror/Comedy (Video Interview)

Most people will probably know Kyle Mooney from his nine-season tenure on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” but in 2017, he wrote and starred in the comedy Brigsby Bear, which debuted to acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, showing him to be capable of much more than short comedy sketches.

Now, Mooney is back, teaming with his long-time friend Evan Winter to direct and co-write Y2K, a horror-comedy starring Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, and Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), as three high school kids who attend a New Year’s Eve party on the eve of the year 2000, only to experience absolute terror when technology comes to life and starts killing people at the stroke of midnight. Apparently, the worries of 1999 were far more pervasive in the minds of Mooney and Winter to come up with that idea.

Cinema Daily US spoke with Mooney and Winter about how Y2K came together, casting the young actors and Mooney’s own role. They also told us about how they managed to get a well-known 1999 personality to appear in the movie in a much bigger role than some might be expecting — it’s better not to know who that is, since it’s a fun surprise. We also learned from Mooney how his return to “Saturday Night Live” came about a few weeks back, for him to appear in a sketch and the monologue by host and musical guest, Charlie XCX.
