Adam Wingard who has directed films such as “V/H/S“, “Your Next“, “The Guest”, “Blair Witch“, “Godzilla vs. Kong“, was hired by Paramount to direct a new version of John Woo’s 1997 action-thriller “Face/Off” several years ago. The original movie, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, has been billed as a sequel. Sadly, it appears that those plans have been altered.

According to the Hollywood Reporter this weekend, Adam Wingard left the director’s seat for “Face/Off 2” last summer, with the split being described as a mutual agreement. The studio has an open assignment for “Face/Off 2“, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, with other filmmakers presenting their own visions.

Wingard informed Empire in 2022 that ‘Nicolas Cage is experiencing a unique moment.’ This was considered a Nicolas Cage movie even before Pig was released. It’s become completely obvious now. The studio might have had an interest in a hot, young, and up-and-coming actor a few years ago. Cage is once again one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors. “We’re really honing in on it,” Wingard said of the script he was writing with partner Simon Barrett. “We’re not going to share it until everybody’s like, ‘This is the one.’”

The original film starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage as an FBI agent and a sadistic terrorist who quite literally swap faces. “In order to foil a terrorist plot, an FBI agent undergoes facial transplant surgery and assumes the identity of a criminal mastermind, who murdered his only son. The plan turns sour when the criminal wakes up prematurely and seeks revenge.”

What is Adam Wingard doing in the meantime? Wingard has planned a new movie, Onslaught for A24, but he won’t be directing the next Godzilla x Kong movie, “Supernova.
