Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment have announced that Alejandro G Iñárritu’s latest film, starring Tom Cruise, will be released on October 2, 2026. The cast of the yet-untitled movie will also include Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed.
According to the official announcement, the upcoming film will follow “the most powerful man in the world [as he] embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
The film will be the Mexican director’s first English-language production since The Revenant in 2015. It will also mark his continued collaboration with screenwriters Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, who wrote the script for his Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) in 2014. They will be joined by Sabina Berman, who is listed as a co-writer. Earlier films by Iñárritu include Amores Perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006), Biutiful (2010), and Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths (2022). Both Amores Perros and Biutiful garnered Oscar nominations for Best International Feature Film.
Iñárritu is the first Mexican filmmaker to be nominated for either director or producer in the history of the Academy Awards, the first to win an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and for Best Picture, the first to receive the Best Director Award at Cannes, and the first to win a DGA Award for Outstanding Directing.
Tom Cruise’s next film, to be released in the U.S. in May of 2025, will be Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth installment in the franchise. Hüller just completed making Project: Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and scheduled for release by Amazon MGM in March of 2026.
Warner Bros. also announced several changes to its release schedule over the next several years. The Batman sequel, which had originally been slated for IMAX release on October 2, 2026, will instead premiere a year later, on October 1, 2027. The debut dates for Mickey 17 and Sinners will also be swapped, with Mickey 17 now scheduled for release on March 7, 2025 and Sinners on April 18 of that year.
