Andrew Stanton has been tapped to direct the upcoming Toy Story 5, according to a statement by Pixar’s chief creative officer Pete Docter.
Stanton is a veteran creative with Pixar, having directed Finding Nemo and WALL-E for the studio, both of which won Oscars for Best Animated Feature. He also wrote the scripts for eight films, including the first two Toy Story animations.
Docter was quoted as saying that the “surprising” Toy Story 5 sequel is still two years away, with a release date set for June 19, 2026. Plans for the sequel had first been announced by Disney’s Bob Iger early in 2023, with Tim Allen set to reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear. It’s still unconfirmed whether Tom Hanks will be returning as Woody in the upcoming project.
Andrew Stanton has been with Pixar for more than 40 years. He also done several live-action features, including John Carter (2012) and In the Blink of an Eye, which will be released this fall. Stanton will also directed two live-action sci-fi features, Chairman Spaceman and Revolver.
Here is a synopsis of the Toy Story concept as posted on the Pixar website (www.pixar.com):
“Ever wonder what toys do when people aren’t around? Toy Story answers that question with a fantastic fun-filled journey, viewed mostly through the eyes of two rival toys – Woody, the lanky, likable cowboy, and Buzz Lightyear, the fearless space ranger. Led by Woody, Andy’s toys live happily in his room until Andy’s birthday brings Buzz Lightyear onto the scene. Afraid of losing his place in Andy’s heart, Woody plots against Buzz.
“But when circumstances separate Buzz and Woody from their owner, the comically-mismatched duo eventually learn to put aside their differences, and they find themselves on a hilarious adventure-filled mission where the only way they can survive is to form an uneasy alliance.”
