Sam Mendes has cast the wives of the four Beatles wives for his upcoming biopic on the Fab Four that will be released by Sony. The project, entitled The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, will be the first to receive the imprimatur of their surviving family members.

In the biopics, Japanese actress Anna Sawai will play Yoko Ono, the wife of John Lennon. Saoirse Roman will take on the role of Linda Louise Eastman, the wife of Paul McCartney. George Harrison’s wife Pattie Boyd will be portrayed by Aimee Lou Wood, and Ringo Starr’s wife Maureen Starkey will be played by Mia McKenna-Bruce.

According to an official statement released by Mendes: “Maureen, Linda, Yoko, and Pattie are four fascinating and unique figures in their own right — and I’m thrilled that we’ve managed to persuade four of the most talented women working in film today to join this amazing adventure.”

All four performers have distinguished track records in recent films. Anna Sawai had previously appeared in Shogun and Monarch: Legend of Monsters; Saoirse Ronan was seen in Lady Bird and Little Women; Aimee Lou Wood performed in The White Lotus and Sex Education; and Mia McKenna-Bruce had roles in Persuasion and Vampire Academy.

Each of the four films will focus on one of the Beatles as they emerged from relative obscurity in Liverpool in the early 1960s to become the world’s most influential band before breaking up in 1970.

Linda (née Eastman) met McCartney in 1967 while working as a photographer and they married in 1969. A member of McCartney’s band Wings, she died of breast cancer in 1998. Yoko Ono met Lennon when she was showing her conceptual art at a London gallery. They married in 1969 after Lennon divorced his first wife, Cynthia Powell, who has not yet been cast in Mendes’s film.

Ono and Lennon first met in 1966 at a London gallery where she was showing her conceptual art. Lennon was still married to Cynthia Powell at the time (a role that has not yet been cast), but they divorced in 1968, and Lennon and Ono married the next year. Boyd was working as a model when she met Harrison on the set of the Beatles’ film A Hard Day’s Night. After their divorce in 1977, she was married to Eric Clapton for ten years. Starkey began dating Starr when she was 16 and working as a hairdresser. They married in 1965 and divorced in 1975. Starkey died of leukemia in 1994.
