Anya Taylor-Joy Wants to Play Elsa in a Live-Action Adaptation of Disney’s ‘Frozen’

Anya Taylor-Joy told an interviewer for Vogue Hong Kong this week how much she would love to play the character of Elsa if Disney decides to do a live-action adaptation of Frozen, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale The Snow Queen.

Kristen Bell had voiced the character in the original animated version of the story, which debuted in 2013, followed by a sequel in 2019. The franchise has since earned more than $2.7 billion worldwide while spawning offshoots such as rides at Disney theme parks.
Then, in November of 2023, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced that Frozen 3 and 4 were in the works, though the studio has never confirmed that it was contemplating a live-action version.

In discussing the reasons for her interest in the role, Taylor-Joy was quoted as saying: “It would be very fun to shoot ice out of your hand. Also, you’d just be the favorite at every kid’s birthday party. All of my siblings have children now, so I would love for them to be able to say ‘my auntie is Elsa.’ That would be pretty sick.”

The 28-year-old actress enthusiastically added, “I would love to do a musical because I’m a bit addicted to hard work. I like having an impossible mountain to climb. The idea of having to be able to sing, dance, and act at the same time would just really thrill me.”

Taylor-Joy credits her early training as a ballet dancer as being a major asset to her career and to life in general. “My background as a dancer has helped me with everything in my life,” she said. “It’s not only the discipline that it instills in you. I danced ballet from ages 3 to 15, and it doesn’t matter if you go to a party; you’re up at five o’clock in the morning to get to that six o’clock dance lesson. I see acting as a rhythm thing; I almost hear it as music, and that helps so much with stunt choreography because you’re in a dance with every other performer around you, so you don’t only know your own beats, you know everybody else’s beats in order to keep everyone safe.”

Such training also came in handy when she had to perform stunts in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Taylor-Joy declared that “I relished the opportunity to be able to do as many stunts as I did, because there’s a very specific perfectionism that comes with stunts. You can do something kind of right or you can get it completely right and that’s not often the case in life. And I loved it.”
