Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith is reportedly looking to shake up its cast. According to Deadline, the titular roles of John and Jane played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are up for grabs.

The first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith introduced Glover and Erskine as two spies who had assumed the identities of John and Jane Smith. In the final episode of the season, the characters were involved in a gunfight, though it’s not clear whether they survived.

Deadline’s source claims that Amazon MGM Studios is already auditioning replacements, with singer-writer Billie Ellish rumored to be on the shortlist. Ellish, a musician who has won two Oscars, made her debut in an episode of Donald Glover’s Swarm series.

Neither Amazon nor MGM have confirmed details, but Francesca Sloane, the co-creator of the series, was quoted as saying “If we tell you too much, you’ll know early if they survived.” Sloane also said it was possible that the show would be recast as an anthology of seasonal stories.

In an interview with Crew Call, Sloane added that “There’s no standoff, we love each other very much. This is literally just a creative conversation of us wanting to bring the best version of Season 2 possible, and allowing us to cook in our kitchen in our little inner circle before the world gets a peek at it. That’s the only reason we’re being so coy about it.”

Sloane stressed that she was not displeased with the Glover-Erskine combination. “We wanted the ending to leave on this nod to 70s cinema cliffhanger where it feels emotional and allows the audience to try to figure out what’s next. We thought to ourselves that even if the season does not come back, we felt satisfied that would be the ending of the story. If there is a second season, we want to give time to create an answer to that without showing all of our cards right now… I love the Maya and Donald combo, and the fact that people are so in love with the pair makes me endlessly happy.”
