Brad Pitt’s Upcoming Race-Car Film Stalls Over Unusable Footage

Brad Pitt’s upcoming film on Formula One auto racing has stalled in the wake of strike-related sponsorship issues that are causing much footage to be scrapped.

The yet-unnamed movie is being directed by Joseph Kosinski, with a cast that includes Brad Pitt and Lewis Hamilton as well as Damon Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, and Tobias Menzies. Pitt plays the role of Sonny Hayes, a veteran driver who comes out of retirement to train a younger prodigy.

Brad Pitt is coproducing the film with Jerry Bruckheimer and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, who is playing himself in the movie.

Hamilton was quoted as saying “We want everyone to love it and to really feel that we encapsulate what the essence of this sport is all about.”

During the past summer, many scenes were shot at Silverstone’s British Grand Prix, but none of them can be used because of legal issues involving the film’s sponsors—fallout from the recent SAG-AFTRA strike, which prohibits the use of such prerecorded footage.

Brad Pitt and the production team voluntarily agreed to these stipulations in a show of solidarity with the demands of the writers’ union.

But not being able to use the Silverstone footage is particularly disappointing to the filmmakers since they believe the material to be quite impressive.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Brad Pitt described the jettisoned footage in these words: “I’ll tell you what’s amazing about [the movie]. You’ll see the cameras mounted all over the car. You’ve never seen speed, you’ve never seen the G-forces like this. It’s really amazing.”

As an unnamed source told The Sun: “It really is a nightmare for Brad Pitt and the team. A lot of events had been earmarked for filming throughout the year which would have helped reduce costs rather than having to recreate high-speed moments and wide shots. However, with all the sponsors changing it now makes the footage defunct. It’s gutting for Brad Pitt and Lewis Hamilton who see this project as their baby.

Apple Studios, who are helping make the film, are far from impressed but at the end of the day, there isn’t a lot they can do.”
