A sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is in the works at Netflix, with David Fincher poised to direct. Brad Pitt, who’d appeared in the original release in 2019, will be reprising his role as stuntman Cliff Booth. It’s been reported that the budget for the upcoming project is in the neighborhood of $200 million.
News of the planned film was revealed at the movie industry’s annual Cinema.Com confab in Las Vegas. Sony Pictures released the original Once Upon a Time… film in 2019, with Tarantino the beneficiary of a deal that gave him the film’s copyright.
Tarantino had recently been attached to a proposed plan to create his tenth feature to be titled The Movie Critic with Brad Pitt cast in the leading role, but the plans were jettisoned. The acclaimed writer-director had written several films that he did not end up directing, such as Tony Scott’s True Romance and Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk till Dawn. Fincher is also known for the two films he created for Netflix: Mank and The Killer.
This would not be the first time Pitt and Fincher will have worked together. They’d previously collaborated on several acclaimed films, including the Se7en thriller, the satirical Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Although no production schedule has yet been revealed, some sources believe the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel will be going into production this summer.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a dark comedy, was set in 1969, when the “old Hollywood” was in decline and the film industry was further shaken by the Manson family murders which took the lives of Sharon Tate, among others. Featuring an all-star cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, the film followed the travails of a fading actor and his stuntman double. It premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and grossed more than $392 million worldwide. The movie was selected as one of the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review and the American Film institute. It also won a Golden Globe for Best Picture – Comedy.
