Dermot Mulroney has been cast in the upcoming sequel to this year’s hit fifth film in the popular Scream franchise, which is tentatively titled Scream 6. The actor, who previously appeared in such horror movies as Umma and Insidious: Chapter 3, will reportedly play a police officer in the next Scream feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The casting of the My Best Friend’s Wedding star in Scream 6 comes as Scream 2022‘s filmmakers have signed on to return to the series’ next installment. Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, from the filmmaking collective Radio Silence, are set to return to the Scream franchise to helm its latest entry. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are also set to return to the series to once again write the script.
Detailed plot details for the upcoming slasher movie have not yet been released. However, it’s being reported the upcoming follow-up “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”
“This movie has to be willing to risk it all in order to subvert all of those expectations,” Gillett previously told Empire about Scream 6. “And we’re so far down the rabbit hole of Scream movies, that it’s all up for grabs at this point.”
Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Jenna Ortega, who all appeared in Scream 2022, are among the characters who will be returning to once again fight back against the killer known as Ghostface. Hayden Panettiere, who was one of the stars of the franchise’s third sequel, Scream 4, is also returning to the series to reprise her fan-favorite role of Kirby Reed.
Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak are serving as producers on Scream 6. Original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson and Chad Villella, the third member of Radio Silence, are executive producing the film alongside Spyglass Media’s Gary Barber, Peter Oillataguerre, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad and Marianne Maddalena.
