Variety reported this week that a new documentary is in the works about Leona Helmsley, the New York real-estate mogul known as the “Queen of Mean” for her disdainful attitude toward servants, employees, and taxpayers.
The film will reportedly include never-before-revealed tapes of Helmsley tussling with fellow Manhattan real-estate player Donald Trump who called her “a disgrace to the industry and a disgrace to humanity in general.” It also gives viewers a glimpse into the tax evasion case pursued by Rudy Giuliani when he was a federal prosecutor. Though she denied ever having famously said, “We don’t pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes,” she was convicted of tax fraud and sentenced to 16 years in prison, though she only served 21 months.
The wjdow of Harry Helmsley, another big player on the New York scene, Leona came to prominence in the 1980s when she was managing his portfolio, which included a string of luxury hotels. Harry Helmsley’s firm also owned the Empire State Building and other platinum properties.
According to Variety, the Helmsley picture will be produced and directed by Filmbank’s Robert Patterson, whose credits also include HBO’s All About Ann. Serena Turner and Emil Pinnock have also reportedly signed on as producers, working with indie studio Gunpowder & Sky.
“From day one, Leona Helmsley alleged that she and husband Harry were framed and that her prosecution was thrown. It’s taken 30 years to uncover the exclusive tapes, evidence, and participation from those willing to come to her defense,” Patterson was quoted in Variety as saying. “And now, through recently unearthed exclusive audio and interviews, Leona will finally be able to mount a real defense.”
Born as Lena Mindy Rosenthal in 1920, Leona dropped out of high school and went through a series of marriages before marrying Harry in 1972. Even after her death in 2007, her extravagant personality continued to rile her detractors; her will set up a $12 million trust fund for her pet Maltese.
