Don Cheadle Says Steven Soderbergh Might Make Another Ocean’s Movie

Actor Don Cheadle stars in No Sudden Move, director Steven Soderbergh’s latest film that premieres this Thursday on HBO Max. Cheadle has worked with Soderbergh before, first on Out of Sight and Traffic and then on the three Ocean’s Eleven movies that were initially based on the classic 1960 Rat Pack caper. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cheadle indicated that Soderbergh may be ready to make a new film for the popular franchise.

According to the article, Cheadle said, “We were talking about it, and then Bernie passed, and very quickly we were like, ‘No, we don’t want to do it. But I just did a movie with Stephen and he said, ‘I think there may be a way to do it again. I’m thinking about it.’ And it didn’t go much further than that. But I don’t know; I don’t know who all would be in it.

It would be interesting to see.”

The first Ocean’s Eleven film was released twenty years ago and starred Cheadle, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Eddie Jemison, Shaobo Qin, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, and Carl Reiner. Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia were also prominent players in the first film, and both Mac and Reiner have passed away since its release.

The film was a hit, grossing $450 worldwide, and was followed by Ocean’s Twelve in 2004, which made $362 million, and Ocean’s Thirteen in 2007, which made $311 million.

Most recently, Soderbergh was a producer onOcean’s 8, which landed in 2018 with an all-female cast that included Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, and Anne Hathaway. Qin and Gould made cameos in that film, which also included a plot point that Clooney’s Danny Ocean, the brother of Bullock’s character, was dead. It’s not yet clear whether a new film would pick up where Ocean’s Thirteen left off or bring the two casts together for an epic heist in a blockbuster brimming with talent.
