Shogun and The Bear have emerged at the top of the nomination list for this year’s 78th Emmy Awards, which were announced this morning.
The final winners will be announced at the official awards ceremony scheduled to be broadcast live by ABC on Sunday September 15, though a host for the Los Angeles ceremony has not yet been chosen. Hulu will stream the event the next day. The 2023 ceremony had been postponed to January of this year, due to complications arising from the Writers’ Guild strike.
FX’s Shogun led this year’s list with 25 nominations, including those for best limited series. Shogun’s stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai also garnered nominations for best performances. FX earned a total of 93 nominations, including 23 nominations for its comedy series The Bear.
The Bear had already won 10 Emmys in 2023, setting a record for the number of wins by a series in its first season. Its cast members also fared well in this year’s list of nominees, including Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, and Liza Colón-Zayas.
This year, FX captured the number-two position in terms of nominations received by a single network, eclipsed only by Netfllix, which earned 107. For the first time in many years, neither HBO nor Max were among the top two recipients.
Responding to its excellent track record this year, FX’s chief John Landgraf was quoted in Variety as saying: “This one really caught us by surprise and in the best possible way. You just feel this overwhelming sense of pride for the artists for the nominees.”
In addition to Shogun and The Bear, FX also finally won a comedy-series nomination for Reservation Dogs. Another coup was achieved by the nomination of Selena Gomez for her role in the third season of Only Murders in the Building.
Other top nominees in this year’s list include HBO’s True Detective; Night Country, which captured 19 nominations in the limited/anthology series; and NBC’s Saturday Night Live, with 17 nominations as the most-recognized broadcast. Apple TV+ received 70 nominations, led by The Morning Show with 16, Palm Royale with 11, and Lessons in Chemistry with 10.
This year’s nominations were the result of voting by some 22,000 members of the Television Academy, who made their selections from a pool of 229 series by producers, down from 309 last year, due to factors that included the writers’ strike that played havoc with scheduling and eligibility requirements.
All television shows, limited series, or made-for-TV film entries must have been released between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024 in order to be in consideration for this year’s ceremony.
The Emmys are voted upon each year by the members of the Television Academy. The final round of voting will come to a close on Aug. 26, less than a month before the ceremony is set to air live on Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
