Godzilla and Kong, be forewarned: Mothra the kaiju is on her way back, and will be joining you in the upcoming sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. To debut in the spring of 2024, this will be the 38th film in the Godzilla franchise, the 13th film in the King Kong franchise, and the fifth Godzilla film to be completely produced by a U.

S. studio, according to Superherohype.com. 

Mothra had made her initial MonsterVerse appearance in the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but she’d originally debuted in a 1961 release by Toho Studios. The upcoming New Empire movie will be a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, which was first screened in 2021. According to the official synopsis, New Empire “follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own.”

The synopsis goes on to say that “the epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be directed by Adam Wingard from a script by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater. Cast members will include Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Fala Chen, Alex Ferns, and Rachel House.

All three kaiju—King Kong, Godzilla, and Mothra, are arguably the most easily recognized film monsters of all time. King Kong made his debut in 1933, famously climbing the newly constructed Empire State Building with Fay Wray, whom he had abducted. Godzilla, a prehistoric monster, first appeared in Japan, in Ishiro Honda’s iconic 1954 film, and has since become a global pop-culture icon in films, comic books, video games, and television shows. Mothra made her screen debut in 1961 as a female kaiju, more heroic than destructive, who is typically depicted as a colossal caterpillar-like larva accompanied by two fairies who speak on her behalf.



Filming on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was completed a year ago. It will be released in U.S. theaters by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures on April 12, 2024.
