Henry Cavill Cast in Amazon MGM Studio’s Voltron

Henry Cavill has been cast as the titular character in Amazon MGM Studios’ film adaptation of Voltron. The Superman actor will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber in the live-action feature that’s based on the mecha anime, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cavill will be joining up-and-coming actor Daniel Quinn-Toye in Voltron, which will shoot this fall in Australia The latter was cast in the movie after he impressed the studio and helmer with his West End theater work opposite Tom Holland.

The animated Voltron television series was adapted from several Japanese anime shows from Toei Animation. The series was produced by Peter Keefe and Ted Koplar through their production company World Events Productions.

The first season of Voltron featured the Lion Force Voltron and was adapted from the show Beast King GoLion. The second season, featuring the Vehicle Team Voltron, was adapted from the unrelated series Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe was the top-rated syndicated children’s show for two years during its original run in the mid-1980s. Its franchise then extended to three follow-up series, several comic books, a line of toys and video games.

The animated small screen project focused on five young pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions. The vehicles join together to form the eponymous mega-robot.

The plot details for the upcoming live-action film starring the former The Witcher actor have not yet been released. Thurber wrote the movie’s script with Ellen Shanman.

The Voltron film will be produced by Todd Lieberman via Hidden Pictures, World Events Productions’ Bob Koplar, Thurber and Hobie Films’ David Hoberman.

Before he was cast in Voltron, Cavill appeared in two action thrillers this year, including helmer Matthew Vaughan’s Argyle for Apple Original Films and director Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare for Lionsgate. He also made an surprise cameo in this summer’s hit superhero sequel, Deadpool & Wolverine.

The DC Universe actor is reuniting with Ritchie for the upcoming action thriller In the Grey, which will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzalez, as well. Cavill will also star in John Wick series director Chad Stahelski’s reboot of Highlander. The long-in-development reimagining is expected to shoots next year. The actor is also executive producing the Warhammer 40,000 franchise across all Amazon MGM Studios productions.
