Baseball’s All Stars are not the only luminaries now boycotting Georgia in the wake of that state’s draconian voter-suppression laws. This week, a couple of Hollywood stars — a director/actor duo – announced they, too, would be taking their business elsewhere.

Antoine Fuqua and Will Smith have declared they will not have Georgia on their mind while shooting Emancipation,  their big-budget runaway-slave saga that Apple Studios reputedly committed $120 million to make.

 In a joint statement, Fuqua and Smith said, “We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access. The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting.

Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.”

Emancipation had been slated to begin shooting in the Peachtree State  on June 21, with Smith playing the role of an antebellum-era fugitive slave named Peter who flees bondage in Louisiana with the intention of seeking freedom in the North. It is based on the true story of “Whipped Peter,” whose experience inspired many Blacks  to enlist in the Union Army. Fuqua will direct the film, based on a screenplay by William N Collage.

Fuqua and Smith join other film-industry figures in protesting the Trump-inspired legislation, including filmmaker James Mangold and actor Mark Hamill, reports Variety. They have been joined by corporate executives representing Delta,  Coca-Cola, AMC, Merck, and Starbucks, says the trade daily.
