Kakao Entertainment is developing a live-action film based on the recent Crunchyroll anime Solo Leveling. The production, based on the South Korean novel by Chugong, had earlier been adapted into a webtoon and an anime television series, also spawning video games.
The project is still in the early development stage, so no further information has been released about the plot, cast, or projected release date.
The plot for Solo Leveling deals with the adventures and misadventures of Sung Jinwoo, described as the world’s weakest hunter. After barely surviving slaughter by monsters in a dungeon, he is chosen by a mysterious force called the “System” that attempts to “level up” his strength. Sung Jinwoo then sets out on an odyssey to understand why he is destined to become the Shadow Monarch. The lead character of Sung Jinwoo was voiced in Japanese by Taito Ban and in English by Aleks Le.
When the television series opened its second season earlier this month, it amassed 129,000 likes in the first day, breaking Crunchyroll’s previous record for the “most liked” premiere episode. Soon after its release, the Ragnarok webtoon became a hit in Japan and Korea. The Solo Leveling: Arise game has already been downloaded more than 50 million times.
According to a statement by its producers. “Solo Leveling has now established itself as an IP representing K-content not only at Kakao Entertainment but also domestically and internationally. Kakao Entertainment will continue to invest in the Solo Leveling IP and create record-breaking history together. [Ita] original setting continues through Ragnarok, following the main story. We can look forward to endless expansion in the future.”
Critical response to Solo Leveling has been generally positive. According to the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator, the first season achieved a 100% approval rating over nine reviews. The series premiere also received accolades from reviewers on the Anime News Network.
