Kathryn Hahn’s Limited Series About Joan Rivers Has Been Scrapped

The Comeback Girl, a limited series about the late comedian Joan Rivers and starring WandaVision star Kathryn Hahn will not be going forward as planned. Variety reported Monday the project had been scrapped because the creative team did not secure the rights to Rivers’ story from her daughter Melissa. The series could have been made as an unauthorized production, but the filmmakers wouldn’t have been permitted to use the elder Rivers’ signature jokes and catchphrases.

The show was being produced Warner Bros.

Greg Berlanti had signed on to direct and executive produce it from a spec script by Cosmo Carlson.

Joan Rivers rose to fame in the mid-1980s as a successful stand-up comedian and late-night talk-show guest and fill-in host for The Tonight Show. She was a commentator on E!’s Fashion Police and won Season 2 of Donald Trump’s The Celebrity Apprentice. There’s been many documentaries made about Rivers over the years, this would have been a series based on one specific part of her life, and with Melissa Rivers withholding the rights to that, there was a question of whether she had plans for a different biographical take on the life of her mother. A spokesperson for Melissa said that currently there are no plans for anything to be announced yet.
