Kumail Nanjiani Becomes the Chippendales Co-Founder in the Hulu Limited Series

Emmy Award-nominated actor Kumail Nanjiani is returning to the small screen after receiving acclaim for his performances on such television shows as The Twilight Zone and Silicon Valley. Hulu announced today that it has put in a straight-to-series order for the performer’s limited series, Immigrant.

In the eight-episode show, Nanjiani will portray Indian-American entrepreneur and Chippendales founder, Somen “Steve” Banerjee. Immigrant will follow the male revue’s equally comedic and crime-ridden rise in fame, and the lengths the entrepreneur took to secure his business’ status as a cultural phenomenon.

Besides playing Banerjee, Nanjiani will also serve as an executive producer on the series, alongside Dylan Sellers and Emily V. Gordon. The show, which is being produced by 20th Television, will be written by fellow executive producers, Rajiv Joseph and Mehar Sethi.

Immigrant will also be written and executive produced by Robert Siegel, who’s also penning another limited series for Hulu, the biographical Pam & Tommy. That show will star Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the title roles of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee.

The news of Immigrant being picked up by the streaming service comes after it was announced in October 2020 that Oscar nominated actor, Dev Patel had signed on to play Banerjee in a film that would be helmed by Cruella director, Craig Gillespie. However, there hasn’t been any recent reports on the movie’s development since its initial announcement.

Before landing the title role in Immigrant, Nanjiani first garnered fame for his comedic skills in several hit comedy films. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for writing the hit rom-com, The Big Sick, and later went on to lead Stuber and The Lovebirds. He’ll next be seen on the big in recent Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao’s Marvel superhero movie, Eternals.
